2017 Belle Coco Republic Interior Design Awards
A piece of sculpture in the form of an outstanding home for one of Australia’s leading art collectors, a revolutionary retail space that balances simplicity, and the unexpected, and a restaurant that pays homage to Australian flora are among the winners of the 2017 Belle Coco Republic Interior Design Awards, the country’s most popular interior design awards program.
Now in its seventh year, the Belle Coco Republic Interior Design Awards are hosted by Belle magazine and premium homewares purveyor, Coco Republic. This year’s awards attracted more than 270 submissions across nine categories including residential, commercial and hospitality divisions.
Winning three of the awards in this year’s program was Sydney-based firm, Smart Design Studio for its work on Indigo Slam, the home of Sydney philanthropist, Judith Nielson. The high-profile home situated in Sydney’s Chippendale, showcases a facade of sculptured concrete, while boasting serene, light, living spaces. Smart Design Studio proved to be a triple threat taking out the Best Residential Interior award, Best Residential Kitchen Design and was the joint winner of Best Residential Bathroom Design with B.E. Architecture – all for the Indigo Slam project.
The most sought-after award for the evening, the Belle Coco Republic Interior Designer of the Year was presented to dynamic interior design directors, Jonathan Richards and Kirsten Stanisich of SJB. With their unique approach to interior architecture and design they join the established ranks of past winners for their contribution across commercial, residential and hospitality projects.
For the first time this year, the Belle Coco Republic Interior Design Awards celebrated two new awards categories. The Rado Emerging Design Star award was won by young gun, Yasmine Ghoniem of Amber Road, who was awarded for excellence among design firms established within the past five years. The second new award, Best Work with Colour, was won by David Flack from Flack Studio and demonstrated that his masterful colour choices across all of his projects created maximum impact.
“Congratulations to all our winners and entrants,” said editor of Belle magazine, Tanya Buchanan. “Year on year, the awards showcase the innovative thinking that shapes the Australian interior design industry and this year was just exceptional. It is always a privilege to see the outstanding work of the brightest talents in our field.”
The awards evening took place at the Coco Republic showroom in Alexandria on Thursday, May 25. An impressive guest list of established practitioners and emerging designers circulated the room while toasting their award-winning peers with a flute of Veuve Clicquot.
