ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK STAR HEADLINES VIDEO JUNKEE 2017

Australia’s Only Festival Dedicated to the Golden Age of Video Announces First Line-Up

In an Australian first, a festival for creators and lovers of video, Video Junkee 2017, launches today announcing that Yael Stone, star of the hit Netflix Original series Orange is the New Black, will lead an incredible line-up of speakers for the Festival’s inaugural event.

Taking over Sydney’s iconic Carriageworks on Friday 28 and Saturday 29 July, Video Junkee 2017 is a new Festival from the team at Junkee Media presented in partnership with Destination NSW, the NSW Government’s tourism and major events agency. The Festival is a two-day celebration of creativity and innovation in video, presented through a series of talks, screenings, masterclasses and awards that brings together world leading and emerging content creators to discuss the Golden Age of video.

“Let's have a conversation about the stories we tell, why we tell them and what possible impact they can have in the real world? Where the attention deficit media cycle is set to dangerously fast timer, what can stories actually do for our global consciousness?” said Stone.

“I'm positively rolling up my sleeves, ready to pop the hood with the wonderful Marc Fennell and see if we can try to understand just how this engine works,” she added.

Video Junkee 2017 is co-curated by Marc Fennell and Executive Producer, Henry Kalaf. Fennell, the host of SBS’s The Feed and former Triple J “That Movie Guy” said the Festival programming reflects current trends, “This is the Golden Age of video. We consume video now more than ever. It's the perfect time to bring a festival like this together. Not only to celebrate the great work by creators, streamers and broadcasters but also to make sense of the new frontier - what is the next blockbuster in live video or VR going to look like? Who is the Spielberg of social video? This is the perfect event to find that talent.”

“I've been a fan of Junkee from day one. They've built an authentic home-grown digital voice for young Australians. They are the perfect people to make this festival,” said Fennell.

‘So, what are you watching?' is the question that is being asked both on social media and in lounge rooms, offices, pubs and restaurants as the country embraces new video content of all kinds. Junkee Media CEO, Neil Ackland said, “With the explosion of new content and the many new ways of discovering and watching from mobile phones to the big screen we really believe this is the right time for us to launch the Video Junkee Festival and online platform to harness this new national obsession.”

From Foxtel to YouTube Red, Netflix to BuzzFeed and ABC iview, Video Junkee 2017 has partnered with the biggest Australian and International producers of in demand video content. “These partners will offer up some of their incredible creators, stars and programming heads to share ideas, insights and learnings throughout the Festival,” said Kalaf.

Festival attendees will get access to an exclusive YouTube Red Originals screening with the festival partner also set to present a Creators panel, exploring the platform’s best Australian and International content creators and discussing the future of the world’s most used platform.

Video Junkee 2017 will present a steller line-up of sessions, screenings and exciting events with further speaker and line-up announcements to be in mid-June from Foxtel, YouTube Red, Netflix, ABC iview and BuzzFeed.

Video Junkee 2017 is also proud to announce key partnerships with partner Carriageworks who are hosting the main Event, Dendy Cinemas with screenings at Dendy Newtown and major media partner oOh! Media who are supporting the festival with an extensive out-of-home campaign.

The festival promises to showcase the very best new video content and creators in the country; celebrating, discovering and fostering creativity, talent and innovation in Australian video, encompassing SVOD, Social, Live Streaming, TV, Film and Branded Entertainment.

If you’re a lover, a creator or a consumer of video then head along to Video Junkee 2017 in Sydney to hear from the leaders in video and get a glimpse of what and who Australia will be watching in 2018.
